Nursing Care Plan For Newborn Baby - Newborn babySearch (New) Our doctors see your baby every day, and advise you on the progress of your newborn in the hospital, including what you need to understand about newborn jaundice. Cyterice is the yellowish color of the skin due to the presence of bilirubin (a product of red blood cell breakdown) that is removed from the bloodstream by the liver and excreted in stools and urine. The jaundice in newborns appears first as the yellowish of the skin of the face, which progresses down the body as the level of jaundice increases. This yellowish can also be seen in the white eye. There are no other common signs or symptoms of jaundice. When there are very high levels of bilirubin, babies can be excessively irritable, drowsy or disinterested in the diet, and if not diagnosed and not treated, high jaundice can damage the developing brain. DiagnosisIf your newborn appears jaundic in the hospital, the nurse or doctor can make a jaundice screen with a device applied to the skin (transcutaneous birubinometer), and confirm the level of bilirubin by a blood test of a heel prick. Based on the age and bilirubin level of your newborn, your doctor will advise you on what to do. Phototherapy may be required in a small proportion of newborns before discharge or you will be advised to take your baby to the doctor within 24 to 72 hours after discharge to check your baby's jaundice and feeding pattern. Please bring your newborn to your doctor if:Treatment Blue light phototherapy is used to treat jaundice in the hospital. Your baby will keep undressed under the phototherapy lights for about 24 hours, and will be taken to feed and change diapers. Blue light can be given using a top light bench, or through a blanket type device. Each has its own advantages. During phototherapy, some babies may need extra fluids if recommended by the doctor. Generally, you can keep breastfeeding. If you are separated from your baby during this period, remember to continue expressing your breast milk from 6 to 8 times every 24 hours to keep your milk supply and avoid the engorgement. In the minority of cases where bilirubin levels rapidly increase at very high levels, blood exchange therapy is performed to reduce bilirubin levels in the hope of preventing brain damage. Giving water or glucose food will not lower jaundice. Solar light does not effectively reduce jaundice. There is no oral or tropical medicine available to decrease jaundice. Since bilirubin is excreted from the body in the feces, it breastfeeds your baby frequently to encourage frequent bowel movement. After completing the phototherapy, the baby will be discharged or observed for an increase in bilirubin depending on individual circumstances. An early appointment in one or two days of time will be made if the baby has less than 7 days to check bilirubin levels again. Sunbathing can cause the baby to get rid of or burn the sun. It does not help reduce or prevent jaundice. The avoidance of herbal therapies in breastfeeding mothers will also help reduce the increase in jaundice.
